Wyoming prescribing rules
Independent practice: The Wyoming State Board of Nursing describes Wyoming as a full independent scope of practice state that has followed the national APRN Consensus Model since 2007. APRNs are licensed as independent practitioners in one of the four APRN roles and at least one population focus. They can practice in any setting, and Wyoming law doesn't require supervision or collaboration agreements with any other provider.
Controlled substance registration: To prescribe controlled substances you need prescriptive authority from the Board of Nursing and a Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration from the Board of Pharmacy. You must have the state registration before applying for a DEA registration. It expires June 30 and renews every two years, and Wyoming requires controlled substance prescriptions to be sent electronically (W.S. 35-7-1030).
PDMP searches: Under W.S. 35-7-1060(b), you or your delegate must search the prescription tracking program before first prescribing a Schedule II, III, IV or V controlled substance, and afterward as best practice guidelines require. For opioids, repeat the search every three months for as long as they are part of the patient's treatment. Schedule V drugs trigger the search only when the drug is an opioid.
Renewal CE and insurance: Board rules require every APRN to document three hours of continuing education on responsible controlled substance prescribing or substance use disorder treatment, and to upload proof at renewal. Wyoming is a Nurse Licensure Compact state for RN licenses. The Board's practice guidance doesn't set APRN malpractice insurance limits.
