What Is an Accidental Death Benefit Policy?
An Accidental Death Benefit (ADB) policy pays a benefit if the insured dies due solely to accidental bodily injuries and death occurs within a specified period after the accident (90 days under this program’s definition).
It is focused on sudden, external events—for example:
-
Motor vehicle accidents
-
Certain workplace accidents
-
Other qualifying accidental injuries that directly result in death within the stated time frame
It is not designed to cover death from illness or many excluded activities (more on exclusions below), so most people use it as extra protection alongside traditional life insurance.
Key Features of the Accidental Death Benefit Policy
-
Issue ages:
-
Available for applicants 20 through 59
-
-
Coverage (face amounts):
-
Minimum $50,000, maximum $300,000
-
-
Underwriting:
-
Guaranteed issue – no medical questions on the application for eligible applicants
-
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents (green card)
-
Most applications are approved within about 24 hours
-
-
Benefit period and reductions:
-
Full scheduled benefits are payable until the insured reaches age 70
-
At age 70, the policy’s benefit reduces by 50%
-
The reduced benefit then remains level until the policy expires at age 80
-
-
Billing modes:
-
Annual, semi-annual, quarterly, and monthly options via direct bill, credit card, or EFT
-
This structure lets you lock in accident-specific coverage quickly, without a medical exam, and keep it in place to age 80 (with the scheduled reduction at 70).

Benefits and Available Riders
Built-In Travel Accident Benefit
The ADB policy includes a Travel Accident Benefit at no additional cost:
-
If the insured dies due to a qualifying accident while a passenger on a public conveyance operated by a common carrier, the policy pays an additional 100% of the base accidental death benefit.
-
In plain language: if you die in a covered accident while traveling on a bus, train, commercial airline, or similar public transportation, the accidental death benefit is effectively doubled under this provision.
Optional Riders for Extra Protection
Return of Premium (ROP) Rider – Get Up to 100% of Premiums Back
-
The Return of Premium Rider allows the insured to receive up to 100% of all premiums paid at the end of the rider’s stated expiry year.
-
The percentage of premiums you can receive back increases over time, following a schedule that depends on your issue age and policy year.
-
Younger issue ages have a longer rider period, but all age bands are structured so that, by the final rider year, you can receive 100% of premiums paid under that rider schedule.
This rider is for people who like the idea of accident protection plus a built-in refund feature if they keep the policy through the rider expiry.
Inflation Rider – Automatic 5% Annual Increases, Years 2–6
-
The Inflation Rider increases the policy’s death benefit by 5% of the initial death benefit each year from policy years 2 through 6.
-
After year 6, the increased death benefit remains level for the rest of the policy.
This helps your accidental death coverage keep pace with rising costs during the early years of the policy.
Family Accidental Death Benefit Rider – Spouse & Children
The Family Accidental Death Benefit Rider extends additional accident benefits to an eligible spouse and dependent children of the primary insured. Major features include:
-
Spouse & Dependent Children Benefit
-
If both spouse and children are insured on the rider:
-
Spouse benefit = 50% of the base benefit
-
Children’s benefit = 10% of the base benefit
-
-
If only a spouse is insured: spouse benefit = 60% of base benefit
-
If only children are insured: children’s benefit = 20% of base benefit
-
-
Spouse Double Tragedy Benefit
-
If both the insured and spouse die due to accidents that occur within the same 24-hour period, the spouse coverage increases to 100% of the base benefit.
-
-
Family Auto Safety Benefit
-
If the spouse’s or children’s accidental death occurs while wearing a safety belt as a passenger in a private passenger vehicle, their benefit is increased by 10%.
-
-
College Fund Benefit
-
Provides an additional benefit equal to 10% of the base policy benefit for each dependent child ages 15–22 upon the accidental death of the insured.
-
This rider is aimed at families who want household-wide accident protection in one coordinated plan.
Exclusions You Should Know About
Like any insurance contract, the ADB policy includes exclusions where benefits are not payable. The full list is included in the quoting portal, but key categories include:
-
Death caused or contributed to by illness, infection not directly due to accidental injury, or disease
-
Certain aviation-related deaths when the insured is not a passenger on a commercial aircraft
-
Death due to war, acts of war, riots, insurrection, or terrorist activity
-
Criminal activity, illegal occupations, or attempting to commit a felony
-
Death while incarcerated
-
Death related to drug or substance use, poison, gas, fumes, or radiation (unless taken exactly as prescribed by a licensed physician)
-
Death while operating a motor vehicle with blood alcohol concentration at or above 0.08%, or while otherwise legally intoxicated
-
Participation in certain high-risk or extreme activities (for example: various aerial sports, base jumping, cliff diving, scuba diving below certain depths, certain racing or contest events, etc.)
-
Death that occurs before the insured’s first birthday
Because exclusions are detailed and state-specific, it’s important to review your actual policy and ask questions before relying on coverage for any specific scenario.
