How does the Colorado 750-hour prescribing mentorship work?
After you get provisional prescriptive authority, you have three years to complete 750 hours in a structured mentorship with a Colorado physician or APRN with full prescriptive authority in a matching role and population. Synchronous remote contact counts; email doesn't.
Can a Colorado NP with provisional authority prescribe controlled substances?

Colorado APRN statutes
Insurance requirement: It's unlawful for a Colorado APRN in independent practice to practice unless they buy and maintain, or are covered by, professional liability insurance of at least $500,000 per claim and $1,500,000 aggregate per year (C.R.S. § 12-255-113(1)). The policy must cover all acts within APRN scope (§ 12-255-113(2)), and the Board may set exemptions or lower amounts by rule (§ 12-255-113(3)). Practice authority: Colorado is a full practice state. APRNs are listed on the Board's Advanced Practice Registry (C.R.S. § 12-255-111) and practice in their role and population focus without a physician agreement. Prescriptive authority comes in two steps. Provisional prescriptive authority (RXN-P) requires a graduate degree, controlled-substance and pharmacology education, national certification, the § 12-255-113 insurance, registry listing and an attestation of at least three years of combined clinical experience as an RN or APRN (§ 12-255-112).
Mentorship and prescribing: An RXN-P may prescribe Schedule II-V controlled substances appropriate to role and population focus, but must complete 750 hours in a mutually structured prescribing mentorship within three years to earn full prescriptive authority (Rule 1.15). The mentor, a physician or APRN with full authority, must practice in Colorado in a matching role and population. Remote mentoring has to be synchronous (email doesn't count), and a mentor can't require payment or employment as a condition. If the mentorship isn't finished in time, provisional authority expires.
Renewal, CE and compact: RN, APN and RXN authorities expire September 30 of odd or even years depending on issue date; per DPO, this year's cycle expired 9/30/2026 with renewal open through 11/30/2026. APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete 2 hours of substance use prevention training each renewal period (Rule 1.23), subject to the exemptions listed in that rule. SB26-138, signed June 2, 2026, repealed the statutory mandate behind this kind of prescriber training, so check with DPO whether Rule 1.23 still applies at your next renewal.
