Maryland practice rules

Practice authority: Maryland is a full practice state. Since October 1, 2015, NPs haven't needed a physician attestation, and they perform their functions independently, consulting, collaborating or referring as needed (COMAR 10.27.07). An applicant who has never been certified as an NP in Maryland or any other state must name a mentor on the application. The mentor must be a Maryland-licensed NP or physician with at least three years of clinical experience, available for advice, consultation and collaboration for 18 months from the date the Board receives the application (COMAR 10.27.07.01 and .03).

Controlled dangerous substances: To prescribe controlled substances in Maryland, you need a state CDS registration from the Office of Controlled Substances Administration (OCSA) before you apply for your federal DEA registration. Before a new or renewal CDS registration, you must register with the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program through CRISP. You also complete a one-time 2-hour CE course on prescribing or dispensing controlled substances before your first CDS registration or first renewal (OCSA). OCSA issues CDS registrations on a three-year term.

Renewal and certification: Your NP certification expires with your RN license and renews every two years. At renewal you document every current national certification that supported your Maryland certification. Practicing on an expired national certification is prohibited and can lead to discipline (COMAR 10.27.07.04).
